Marty’s Sunday Morning Forecast – Wintry Veterans Day – 11/11/18

Today: A fairly widespread area of light to at times moderate snow will develop today. Although this system doesn’t look terribly windy, it will be significantly colder than previous storms that have produced snow this season. Snow may start out a bit wet for some areas, especially along the Arkansas River, but the snow will become light and airy before too long. Overall we don’t expect a large amount of water to fall out of the sky, but snow to water ratios will probably be pretty high so it won’t take a lot of water to result in several inches of snow that should be reasonably easy to move with a broom or shovel. Right now the heaviest snow looks to fall over the mountains, particularly south and west of Pueblo where favored areas could receive 5″- 10″ of snow or more. Lighter accumulations of snow on the order of 1″ to 4″ are likely along the I-25 corridor between Colorado Springs and Pueblo, but locally higher amounts are likely on the terrain favored areas near the mountains. The southern I-25 corridor will probably receive a general 3″- 6″ snowfall, but again some favored areas near the mountains could receive more. The far eastern plains should probably expect lighter amounts on the order of 1″- 3″. The colder nature of this storm probably means that roadways will more easily be overcome by even light snow so expect some slick travel conditions to become more common as the snow falls today. Temperatures in the 20s to near 30 should be expected for the plains today while many of our mountain areas won’t warm out of the teens.

Tonight: Chilly with occasional light snow and flurries for most areas, but heavier snow may continue to fall at times over the higher terrain south of the Arkansas River. We expect some slick roadways through the night with the chilly air even if the snow isn’t terribly heavy. By morning the air will have cooled into the single digits over the mountains with teens to near 20 for the plains.

Extended: Some light snow or flurries could linger into Monday morning for some areas but we don’t expect significant additional accumulations of snow on Monday. Monday will remain cold with high temperatures only in the 20s and 30s for the plains, teens and 20s for the mountains. The air will start to warm a bit on Tuesday with 40s more likely for the plains. Wednesday and Thursday will be dry and warmer again with high temperatures in the 50s to near 60 for the plains, mainly 40s over the mountains. Friday could be just a little cooler for the plains but still dry.
