Manitou Springs exhibit features photographer who captured Oswald being shot
It’s one of the most famous pictures in history: the moment Lee Harvey Oswald, the man accused of murdering John F. Kennedy, was fatally shot by Jack Ruby in Dallas.
“It’s the best one I’ve ever taken,” said Bob Jackson, the photographer behind the photo.
It was so good, he won a Pulitzer Prize for it.
“We all realized we had beat our competition. So it was kind of exciting,” he said.
Jackson says the moment was perfect-timing.
“Ruby fired, I fired. Couldn’t have planned it any better. The timing was perfect,” he said.
The timing so perfect, it launched his career over the next 55 years. Something you may not have known is that after a career as a photographer, Jackson now lives in Manitou Springs.
Beginning this weekend, an exhibit will be held at the Manitou Springs Heritage Center featuring photos from Jackson’s career.
“It’s very nice, exciting to be recognized 55 years later,” he said.
Members at the museum can get tickets, and they’re $20 for people who aren’t members.
