Colorado Springs Police release more information regarding Chelton Road homicide

UPDATE: The Colorado Springs Police Department released more information regarding the homicide committed on the 1900 block of S. Chelton Road.

Fire Paramedics arrived at the apartment to find a deceased female wrapped in a blanket in the hallway of the apartment after a maintenance man went inside the building.

Authorities determined the apartment belonged to 48-year-old Judy Smith and that two separate disturbance calls were made by Smith on the 20th of October. Both were regarding her son, Lake William Smith, 24.

During the first call, Ms. Smith told police her son had pulled a knife out on her while she was in her bedroom because the two had gotten into an argument. Lake told authorities he was playing Xbox when his mother told him to go to bed.

She allegedly then pulled out a can of pepper spray, when Lake pulled out a knife. There were no other signs of complaints before police left, and the two agreed to stay separately.

The second phone call made by Ms. Smith also regarded her son. During this call, Smith told authorities her son had pulled out a knife, tried to stab her, and tried to suffocate her. She also said Lake tried starting a fire inside the complex, in which police concluded parts of the apartment did appear to be burned.

On October 26th, a third call was reported. This time by James Smith, father of Lake Smith. James told police his son broke into his apartment and tried stealing his gun and gun casing from inside. After discovering what was happening, James wrestled Lake to the ground and stole his gun and casing back.

CSPD later located Lake Smith that day inside a blue Honda Odyssey minivan registered to his father. Lake was detained and taken into custody for an interview regarding the death of his mother.

Lake originally told police he had nothing to do with the murder of his mother, but later added that he did find his mother’s deceased body inside her apartment later that day. He said he then covered her with a gray blanket and left to call the police.

Smith told police, he and his mother got in an argument on October 22nd after playing Xbox late into the night. Smith said, while playing, he heard voices in his head and went to check on his mother in her bedroom when he found her laying on her right side covered with the blanket.

He explained he could not stab her in the face so he pulled the blanket down enough to stab her in the neck with his pocket knife. When she continued to fight for her life, Lake said he then smothered his mother, placing his hand over her mouth.

According to the affidavit, Smith then used a meat cleaver on the front of his mother’s throat to “keep her from suffering.” Smith left the apartment with the pocket knife, meat cleaver, and a few of his mother’s belongings in which he later tried to throw away.

Smith is facing First Degree Murder charges.
