Police identify suspect in carjacking, Division of Youth Corrections escapee

Police have identified Brendan Cunliffe as the man who stole a vehicle early Tuesday morning.

A 2015 gold Chevrolet Malibu was left running at a convenience store when Cunliffe got inside and drove away. The car was later observed in the afternoon hours speeding and hitting a parked vehicle in downtown Colorado Springs.

A short while later the car was involved in a second accident and became disabled at Academy and Astrozon Blvd. Cunliffe ran from the scene. Police located and arrested Cunliffe in the 2300 block of South Academy Blvd.

After further investigation, it was discovered that Cunliffe had escaped from the Division of Youth Corrections. Police also linked Cunliffe to another stolen vehicle incident that had happened a day earlier.

Cunliffe was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center for multiple cases.

Police want this incident to serve as a reminder for all vehicle owners to never leave their vehicles running unattended.
