Cooler weather brings more snow to Pikes Peak

For the second time this season, changing weather is bringing snow to America’s Mountain.

As of late Monday morning, Pikes Peak Highway officials reported at least 6 inches of wet, heavy snow on the summit, with more falling throughout the day.

As a result, the upper five miles of the highway and the summit were closed.

Officials also reported a steady stream of visitors Monday.

“Some people are even coming to fish,” a cashier at the entry gate said. “They say it’s good weather for it.”

Paul Ignacio, a Fountain resident fishing at Crystal Reservoir, agreed.

“This is very good weather for trout,” he said. “I don’t know why. I feel like they’re alive. They’re out here biting.”

But after a few casts, Ignacio hadn’t felt a nibble on his line.

The young son of a Tennessee family made a snowman that he proudly carried around.

“We don’t get much snow,” said Scott Klaasen, the boy’s father. “What I’m seeing here is about what we get all winter. But my son is excited about it and we’re excited for him.”

The snow eased the disappointment of many visitors who were unable to reach the summit.

“It’s a nice taste of winter,” said Kevin Brannigan, from New York.
