2 endangered Asian elephants arrive at Denver Zoo

With two new members of the group, the Denver Zoo now has the largest bachelor herd of Asian elephants in North America.

You won’t be able to see them in person until later this fall, but Jake and Chuck are the newest endangered elephants to arrive in the Mile High City.

Jake and Chuck join the zoo’s current Asian elephants: Groucho, Bodhi, and Billy. The zoo is working to help protect and save the species, which was classified as endangered due to a decreasing global population of fewer than 35,000.

“Denver Zoo has made tremendous contributions towards the conservation and research of Asian elephants within zoos and in the wild,” said Deborah Olson, executive director of the International Elephant Foundation.

Jake and Chuck are being kept “behind the scenes,” according to the Zoo, while they get comfortable in their new home and undergo a quarantine period of at least 30 days.
