Unearthed police report says Polis pushed worker who stole documents

A 19-year-old police report out of Boulder Colorado gives details about Democrat Gubernatorial Nominee Jared Polis pushing one of his former female workers after she attempted to leave his office with stolen files that belonged to his company.

The report was first dug up by conservative website Washington Free Beacon, just weeks ahead of a gubernatorial election that will pit Polis against his Republican opponent, Walker Stapleton.

Before Jared Polis ran his first campaign in 2000, he was Jared Schutz, a Boulder businessman. In June of 1999, Polis saw Patricia Hughes, a worker who resigned after it was discovered that she was using the company credit card for personal use. When Polis entered the office, she was deleting files from the company computer and had several bags filled with files in the hallway of his Boulder office. Polis asked to search the bags when Hughes refused, Polis called the police. The police report says Hughes was trying to leave Polis’ office with the bags when Polis blocked the door to stop her from leaving.

Hughes then hit him with one of her bags and then according to the report, Polis “put both hands on her shoulders and pushed her back to prevent her from leaving.” Hughes received a welt on her leg after the push.

The report says when police looked through the bags they found several sensitive documents. Some contracts valued to be worth between $25,000 and $75,000. Hughes was charged with and pleaded guilty to one count of theft of trade secrets. Boulder District Attorney spokesperson Catherine Olguin says Hughes was charged and pleaded guilty to one count of theft of trade secrets.

“She received an 18-month deferred sentence with conditions that she have no contact with the victim to return the property and continue mental health treatments,” says Olguin.

Despite the welt, there were no charges filed against Polis.

The Polis campaign released a statement regarding the matter saying, “Jared Polis was the victim of a crime, was the person who called the police, and was found to have done nothing wrong.”
