Pueblo skate shop rewarding good grades with merch giveaway

A skate shop in Pueblo is looking to give parents a little help and students some extra motivation.

SoCo Skate Shop located in downtown Pueblo is offering elementary and middle school students admission into a raffle sweepstakes as long as their report cards are filled with A’s, B’s, and C’s.

In October, SoCo will be raffling off a $200 gift certificate to their own store. Skaters can purchase from variety of boards, pads, helmets, and clothing. ed for by

The raffle is being sponsored and payed for by Mi Casa Transitional Services. The idea to raffle off skating supplies for good grades was thought up by Lisa Garcia-Payne of Mi Casa Transitional Services.

SoCo Skate Shop owners were immediately on board after Garcia-Payne introduced the idea to them.

“If they have A’s, B’s, and C’s, and they come in every quarter. That’s four more chances that parents and kids can have a chance to get 200 dollars worth of a skate board and helmet,” said Chris Guadron, co-owner of SoCo Skate Shop.

Guadron hopes to inspire students to focus inside the school first before hitting the skate park, while at the same time, allowing parents an easy way to motivate their kids to do well in school.

When it comes to skating, skateboards don’t come cheap, many price tags hover around $100.
No one knows this more than Guadron.

“My parents spent money on skate boards and I always thought it was such a luxury to have them,” said Guadron. “This will give parents and kids a chance to have a skateboard. Kids that wouldn’t have one otherwise.”

The first raffle drawing will take place around Halloween. SoCo will have one every quarter of the school year.

Only middle and elementary school students from District’s 60 and 70 can apply. All students need when they walk into the store is a student ID and a report card without any D’s or F’s on it.

Pueblo City Schools has called on local businesses to support the young students. Guadron says they hear that call loud and clear.

“It’s like knocking out two birds with one stone,” sad Guadron. “You are doing good in school and you have a chance to have a free skateboard. That’s so cool I think.”

District 60 officials say they encouraged to see businesses like SoCo supporting local students inside the classroom as well as outside. They say Pueblo is stronger because of it.
