Colorado woman comes forward accusing Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct

A Boulder woman is stepping forward claiming Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh exposed himself to her about 35 years ago.

The New Yorker broke Deborah Ramirez’s story Sunday night. In the article, Ramirez said her claim goes back to a freshman year party at Yale University.

At Ramirez’s Boulder home, a note taped to a trash can reads: “I have no comment.” Stating to call her lawyer, Stan Garnett. Ramirez signs the letter: “Thank you for respecting my privacy.”

“I was quite stunned. It just actually hurt me emotionally, because I knew that this was something that was going to be quite difficult for her,” Regis University Criminal Justice Professor Lisa Calderon said.

Calderon said she was Ramirez’s supervisor about 10 years ago. Calderon said she trained Ramirez to be a victim advocate.

Speaking highly of Ramirez and her work, she adds Ramirez stepping forward wasn’t done lightly.

“She did not share personal information at work, she kept the focus on the victims and for that I commend her,” Calderon said. “I think about how much she’s had to endure silently by keeping this secret.”

Ramirez is also a board member for the Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence. It’s an organization in Boulder that provides services for victims of domestic violence.

On Monday, the organization put out a statement in support of Ramirez that reads:

” We know Debbie Ramirez to be a woman of great integrity and honor. We stand by her and her courageous decision to come forward. It is never simple or easy for survivors to share their experiences. To do so in the face of public scrutiny requires a level of personal strength that is true to the person Debbie is. She has our support, our respect, and our admiration. — the Board and Staff of SPAN.”

KRDO NewsChannel 13 called SPAN to ask additional questions about Ramirez’s work at the organization, but requests were denied.

According to The New Yorker article, Ramirez stated that she’s a registered Democrat, but told the publication she did not come forward for political reasons.

“She has nothing to gain by coming forward,” Calderon said.
