Teller County deputies find illegal pot grow during welfare check

The Teller County Sheriff’s Office arrested two people after finding a suspected black-market marijuana distribution operation during a call for a welfare check this past weekend.

Deputies went to a home in Florissant for the welfare check and smelled a strong odor of marijuana in the area. They then went to the house where the odor was coming from and talked to two people inside, 29-year-old Kevin Bennett and 30-year-old Makenzie Amundson.

While talking to the pair, the deputies noticed “enough evidence in plain view that indicated this was an illegal marijuana grow,” according to a statement from Teller County.

Deputies searched the property on Turnabout Lane and found 197 plants, three pounds of processed marijuana and about $3,400 in cash. Colorado law limits the number of plants grown to 12.

Bennett and Amundson were both arrested and charged with offenses relating to marijuana and distribution of marijuana. Their bonds were set at $50,000 each.
