Pueblo deals with record breaking heat in month of September

Colorado may be inching towards colder temperatures, but down in Pueblo people are still feeling the summer heat. For 8 days, Pueblo has reached temperatures 95 degrees or higher.

These numbers break the previous September warm streak record of 5 days set back in 1956. Pueblo also officially reached 98 degrees on Monday, breaking the record of 96 degrees set back in 2000.

With the recent unseasonable heat streak, people in Pueblo may be forced to spend a little more cash to keep their lawns green.

Pueblo Water Works officials say, usually around this time of year residents will see a dip in their water bill as the temperatures lower, however, that doesn’t appear to be the case this September.

“It was dry and dead so I pulled it up,” said Cathy Colarelli, a Pueblo resident who has kept her garden looking good all summer, however, she’s got more dead plants than live ones after this past week.

“I didn’t water this week either cause I kept thinking it was going to get cold,” said Colarelli.

The city of Pueblo is also looking towards the winter months. Despite the warm weather, public parks won’t be receiving any extra water as we get closer to the colder seasons.

But the watering continues elsewhere.
Keep Pueblo Beautiful is watering hanging plants twice a day this September, as long as the temperatures stay above 90 degrees.

“Usually we water a lot less in September because of the fall weather,” said Robert Finch a crew member hired by Keep Pueblo Beautiful. “We’ve had to really baby the plants. They’ve needed a lot of extra water.”

The warm streak is expected to continue into tomorrow. However, Thursday temperatures are finally expected to let up a bit in Pueblo.

Due to the heat, Pueblo Water Works hopes to have some concrete numbers as to how the recent weather will effect resident’s water bills later this week.
