Super rare aye-aye born at Denver Zoo

The Denver Zoo unveiled its newest baby aye-aye to the world Thursday, and the rare animal is turning heads with its funny looks.

Just look at that thing; even the Zoo acknowledges it’s one of the strangest primates on Earth.

Her name is Tonks, which follows a theme of names from fantasy books — her mother’s name is Bellatrix, also taken from Harry Potter, and her father is Smeagol, the creepy iteration of Gollum from The Hobbit. ( PHOTOS )

Tonks got off to a rough start after being born on Aug. 8, as veterinarians and animal care staff had to teach Bellatrix how to nurse. Zoo staff said she’s now nursing well and that Tonks has gained a lot of weight.

Aye-ayes are nocturnal lemurs and are classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The Denver Zoo says there are only 24 aye-ayes residing in seven zoos in the U.S. — three of them are here in Colorado.

It’s not known how many live in the wild, as they’re hard to see, despite having a very distinct look. Aye-ayes can live up to 20 years.

The Zoo says Tonks is currently in the aye-aye exhibit in Emerald Forest, but she’ll remain in her nest box for a few more months before exploring the exhibit on her own.
