More than a 5K: Race for the Cure showcases survivors

Sunday morning’s sunrise may have been muted by early clouds, but the smiles were bright at Garden of the Gods as thousands prepared to run (or walk or roll) in support of those who have battled breast cancer at the city’s 24th Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

The annual 5K raises awareness and money in the fight against breast cancer, and this year, more than $70,000 was raised.

Before the start of the race, survivors adorned in pink took the spotlight first as they were honored with a parade through the stage and to the stands. ( PHOTOS ) They then blew bubbles in memory of those who battled the disease.

Then it was time to line up for the start — at whatever pace you prefer, of course. This isn’t a race for the seriously competitive; friends and family gathered around the starting line with a tune of cheers and applause for those walking in support.

Among the survivors in the lineup were hundreds of pink placards being worn by other participants. They all represented friends or loved ones who have battled breast cancer, and the disease is fairly common, affecting one in seven Coloradan women at some point in their lifetimes.

The smiles continued as participants meandered through Garden of the Gods (objectively speaking, one of the most beautiful backdrops for a 5K).

The first survivor to cross the finish line was Angi Morton of Colorado Springs, and she did it while barely breaking a sweat.

The first person across the finish line was a 15-year-old Pine Creek High School student named Gage Mata.
