Busiest Labor Day Weekend for Colorado in a decade

Tens of thousands of Labor Day travelers are headed home after the long weekend, creating major traffic congestion throughout Colorado. AAA Colorado predicted it would be the busiest holiday weekend in a decade.

About 640,000 Coloradans hit the road this weekend, bringing their RV’s, campers, and boats for the long drive. While heavy traffic was expected, drivers we spoke with say they didn’t expect the roads to be as packed as they were.

Captain Brian Lyons with Colorado State Patrol agrees, saying this has been the busiest weekend they have seen within the last few years, especially on Monday with everyone going home.

“We’ve seen an increase in the amount of traffic here and even this morning we started to see that migration out of town,” Lyons said.

With so many people on the road, CSP is on full alert looking for any impaired drivers. Captain Lyons said, so far, there have been ten DUI related arrests with nearly half of them happening on Saturday.

“We, unfortunately, had four DUI crashes. One of those resulted in a fatality down in Trinidad,” said Lyons.

The official count of how many arrests there have been in the state will be released on Tuesday.
