Witness: Argument devolved into fatal shooting on UCCS campus

The shooting at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs Wednesday started from an argument over a girl after a night of drinking, according to the arrest affidavit.

Colorado Springs Police named Micahi Stacy Hughes as the suspect, who’s now charged with First Degree Murder in the killing of 18-year-old Jordan Coleman.

A witness to the shooting said Hughes and Coleman were part of a group that was hanging out and drinking alcohol at Garden of the Gods Park Wednesday night.

The witness stated the group later left the park for a nearby Loaf-n-Jug store, according to the affidavit. There, Coleman apologized to Huges for “flirting with Micahi’s girl.” The witness said Hughes said everything was fine, but Coleman started to get upset with Hughes.

The group then moved onto another park, where the argument continued, the witness said in the document. The argument was loud enough to draw attention, so they left the park.

The witness pulled the car of four people, including Hughes and Coleman, into the parking lot at UCCS. It’s there where the witness said Coleman told Hughes he wanted to fight him, but the witness said Hughes stated “several times” he did not.

The witness said the fight turned physical, and Hughes brought out a handgun and pointed it at Coleman. The document said the witness heard Coleman challenging Hughes to shoot him.

The witness said they heard at least two shots that struck Coleman.

The affidavit said the witness, and the other person in the car took Coleman to St. Francis Medical Center for treatment.

Coleman was pronounced dead at the hospital.

In the document, officers stated the car used to take Coleman to the hospital was covered in blood.

Officers found Hughes near the UCCS Family Development Center, where the shooting is believed to have taken place.

The document states that in a Mirandized interview with police, Hughes denied seeing Coleman Wednesday night, and denied being responsible for the shooting.

None of the four people in the car were UCCS students.
