Colorado College welcomes 145th academic class

More than 500 students at Colorado College walked into their first classes Monday morning at Colorado Springs’ historic campus.

These students were seeking a different approach to their secondary education. The college follows a block schedule, meaning students only take one class every three and a half weeks followed by a four-day break, and then they start their next course.

Monday’s set of first-year students is the 145th academic class to start on this campus. Students arrived on campus over a week ago so many were excited to get started in class.

Megan Coch of Highlands Ranch said, “I really hope to just get motivated and excited for this year. There’s a lot of nerves coming in, we’re all first-year, so there’s a lot of nerves kinda coming into this first day.”

Some students came to Colorado College looking for more than just an education.

“I hope to learn a lot of about myself like a lot about who I am and grow as a person cause I think that’s what college is for,” said Katie Wang of San Diego.

Speaking to the students at the welcome convocation were seniors who told newcomers to think hard about what they’re about to embark on.

“It is critical that we as a community reflect on what we want to carry into this new academic year.”

Teachers were also giving their advice to students who they knew would be nervous.

“Everything is going to be OK. A lot of first-year students are intimidated by a new set of expectations but this is where you learn to adapt to new circumstances and to learn a new set of skills to be successful.”

Classes started promptly after the convocation.
