Greyhound bus deliberately crashed at I-25 and S. Academy

Scary moments Monday night for passengers on a bus to Denver as their bus crashed into a guardrail at South Academy and I-25 Northbound because of a man on board threatening people with a knife.

Police have identified 47-year-old Edmundo Arellanes-Audelo as the man they say was threatening passengers with a knife.

Colorado State Patrol said Arellanes-Audelo gained access to a secure part of the bus and tried to attack the bus driver while purposely grabbing the steering wheel and causing the bus to crash.

CSP credits the bus driver with getting the bus stopped without causing any serious injuries or hitting anyone else on the interstate.

A passenger on the bus confronted Arellanes-Audelo, at which point Arellanes-Audelo was able to break out of a bus window.

While exiting the bus, Arellanes-Audelo was confronted by a passer-by armed with a gun. Arellanes-Audelo dropped the knife and remained on the scene until law enforcement arrived moments later.

State Patrol said the driver was injured, but it was not because of the crash, but more likely from being attacked by Arellanes-Audelo.

Passengers huddled along the side of the road while they waited for a new Greyhound bus to take them the rest of the way to Denver.

Arellanes-Audelo received a medical clearance and was booked into jail Monday night. He has been charged with felony criminal mischief, hindering public transportation, felony menacing with a weapon, assault, and wreckless endangerment.
