Methane explosion reported at Miami-Yoder School

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says a methane explosion happened Tuesday afternoon at the Miami-Yoder School.

The good news is that no students were injured, according to the sheriff’s office.

The methane was built up inside a sprinkler system about 150 feet south of the school, the sheriff’s office said, and when a worker went to open a valve, the explosion occurred. It’s not clear how methane got into the sprinkler system.

The worker was airlifted to a local hospital with burns that were non-life threatening, according to EPCSO.

The school is about 40 miles east of Colorado Springs, south of Rush. ( MAP )
