Neighbors say speeding is a problem near fatal accident on Vindicator Drive

A man is dead after crashing through a fence and then running into a tree near Eagle View Middle School.

Colorado Springs Police say it happened just after 10 p.m. Sunday. The driver, who hasn’t been identified, was reportedly seen speeding by a nearby officer. The same officer later found the truck had crashed.

Tire tracks show the driver was headed East on Vindicator Drive. It appeared the truck jumped the curb and ran into a chain-link fence and driving over the grass and eventually hitting a large tree on school grounds.

Cat Davidson, a neighbor who heard the crash from her backyard, said, “We just heard a huge crash. They drove down the side of the fence and up and hit the trees over there.”

Vindicator Road was closed through most of the night but opened back up before regular traffic could come through.

It’s still unclear what happened in the moments leading up to the crash, but neighbors in the area say lots of drivers speed along that road.

Gwen Keffel who was walking her dog said she sees people going over the 35-miles-per-hour speed limit every day. “Well it’s supposed to be 35, I’m not so sure how many people actually do 35,” she said.

The mangled fence left behind by the accident belongs to Eagle View Middle School. Thankfully for students and parents, classes don’t start until Wednesday.

We still don’t know whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Lt. Howard Black with the Colorado Springs Police Department said it’ll be about two to three days before an update on this crash, according to detectives at the scene.

It was unclear when a new fence will be put in place.
