Motorcyclist killed in Saturday morning crash in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs police said the driver of a motorcycle has died after colliding with an SUV Saturday morning.

Police said it happened just before 10 a.m. at the intersection of North Academy Boulevard and Village Road South.

The Major Accident Unit is investigating the crash.

Police diverted northbound Academy traffic at Maizeland Road and southbound traffic at South Carefree Circle.

Police reopened the intersection at 3 p.m.

The crash is the second fatality of the weekend involving a motorcycle on Academy. Just before midnight Friday, police said a woman was killed when she lost control on northbound Academy just a few blocks north of Saturday’s crash.

Police said the woman wasn’t wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle and died at the scene.

The Major Accident Unit said speed was not a factor, and police are seeking information from anyone who witnessed the accident.

Police said the city has had 30 traffic deaths so far this year, 8 more than at this time a year ago.
