Severe storms, hail move through Southern Colorado

4:45 p.m. Severe thunderstorms continue across the area with large hail the main threats. Additional storms will move through the same areas already impacted by hail and heavy rain. Hail and flash flooding will be the main threats through the evening.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING has been issued for Teller County and El Paso County. 60 mph winds and golf-ball sized hail are the threats.

A flash flood warning was issued for southern Colorado Springs and El Paso County until 6:30 p.m.

Hail ranged in size, but areas near Fountain and southern Colorado Springs saw hail as big as baseballs and softballs. We’ve received many reports of vehicles damaged by the hail in the Broadmoor Bluffs area, as well as Fountain and Security-Widefield.

Five people were taken from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to the hospital with injuries due to the hail, according to the Colorado Spring Fire Department. Kids attending the zoo camp were reported to be safe with no injuries. The road was reopened by about 6:15 p.m. for guests to check on their vehicles.

Until 9 p.m. – A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH has been issued for the Pikes Peak Region, the southern mountain and Eastern Plains.

Strong to severe storms are expected around the Pikes Peak Region today. Hail, damaging winds and flash flooding will be the primary concerns with these storms today. The tornado threat is low.
