‘He lived a hero, he died a hero” Family speaks of veteran shot and killed by Aurora Police
Early Monday morning in Aurora, Chad Hayashi found a nightmare down the hall.
“I open my bedroom door and there’s a woman standing there. And she starts saying to me my son is on drugs and he has your baby,” Hayashi said.
Hayashi’s 11-year-old son was in the arms of a naked intruder who was trying to drown and choke his son.
“I immediate dove on this guy and jabbed him up into the throat with my thumb to get him to release the bite and then started wailing on him and he wouldn’t let go of the choke,” Hayashi said.
The intruder shot by Hayashi’s stepfather, Richard “Gary” Black. The intruder was dead on the scene. Aurora Police admitted they shot Black.
“I heard multiple shots which I thought was my dad engaging the other people in the house. There was a pause and then I hear people screaming police and then I hear people enter the house,” Hayashi said.
Aurora Police Chief Nicolas Metz shared a video statement on YouTube Wednesday. He said 911 calls and body camera footage show more of the story.
“Information goes out very quickly and obviously much of that information, particularly as it pertains to this situation has been inaccurate,” Metz said.
Hayashi calls his stepfather heroic, shuddering at the alternative had Black not stepped in.
“He lived a hero, he died a hero,” Hayashi said. “I’d be dead. My son would be dead. My mom, my daughter, we’d all be dead if it wasn’t for him.”
Both the 11-year-old boy and Black’s wife have been released from the hospital.
The officer involved in the shooting was also involved in another police shooting back in June.
Aurora Police said they plan to hold a press conference Thursday regarding the investigation.
