Westminster police suspect arson in apartment fire that killed 2

Authorities believe a fire at a suburban Denver apartment building that killed two people and injured nine others was intentional.

A statement released Tuesday by the Westminster Police Department did not explain how investigators made that conclusion.

A team from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined the Westminster Fire Department to evaluate the remains of the blaze. The ATF team will provide the city with a full report in about a month.

Denver-based ATF agents and the Westminster Police Department are still investigating the case, now considered arson and homicide.

The fire began early on July 22 at the 69-unit Westbury Apartments.

The Adams County coroner’s office has identified the two women killed in the fire as 41-year-old Lea Hamel and 58-year-old Margaret Kelly.
