Aurora police shoot resident after he killed intruder

Investigators say a police officer shot and killed a man who opened fire on someone who had broken into his home in suburban Denver.

The Aurora Sentinel reports police received multiple calls about a break-in at the home early Monday morning, and when officers arrived, they heard gunshots inside.

Police, who described the scene as chaotic and violent, say they encountered an armed man and fatally shot him. That man turned out to be the person who lived in the home and was identified as Richard Black. Family members said Black was a Vietnam veteran who received a Purple Heart medal and was also a former federal agent.

A second man, the suspected intruder, was found dead during a search. A child in the home also suffered serious injuries at the hands of the intruder, but police have not released any other details.

Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz called the circumstances “heartbreaking and tragic” for everyone involved.

Investigators have not released the names of the suspected intruder.
