I-25 construction causes confusion for drivers

New changes to the construction along Interstate 25 between Woodmen and Garden of the Gods is causing confusion among drivers.

Mark Sellers, a Monument resident was driving to church this morning with his family when a lane split caught him off guard. He said, “we turned the corner and suddenly had two ways to go.”

As drivers enter the construction area, there are signs that warn them of a “lane split.” Sellers said, “I felt like I only had two or three seconds to decide which lane I wanted to be in and the one the right looked like an exit and so I was confused.”

The three-lane highway with the split doesn’t take you off the interstate, but drivers we observed sure thought it did. The right-most lane is separated from the rest of the traffic with concrete barriers and orange dividers.

In our first drive-through, all drivers made it through without any slowdowns or changing lanes.

The second, two cars changed lanes at the last minute and stepped on the brakes trying to quickly get over and avoid the concrete barriers.

It’s not an easy lane change and something Sellers says he’s hoping other drivers look out for. He says, “if they’re trying to do something on their phone, or trying to quiet their kids or talking to each other, they can easily be distracted in those two or three seconds.

The construction in that area is expected to be complete by December 2018.
