Totaled cars fill parking lot, many still waiting for repairs after June hail storm

Repair shops around town are still backlogged after the hail storm in June caused millions of dollars worth of damages.

Payout money from car insurance claims alone was around $100 million and that makes the storm the 12th most expensive hailstorm in the state.

Our Skytracker 13 drone captured row after row after row of cars from 50-feet in the air. All of them in the lot after the June 13th hail storm that hit parts of Southern Colorado.

We counted and found several hundred cars are being housed off of Powers and Platte.

This baseball-sized hail in Fountain shattered windshields and dented cars. Many of those cars ended up in the lot after they were bought out by insurance companies.

That storm back in June caused an estimated $104-million worth of damage to cars alone and it’s according to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association.

Craig Porrett owns Color Zone Collision and says they are still dealing with the aftermath of this storm.

“As far as hail damage and roof cuts and hood replacements, we’re booked out till the middle end of September,” he said.

And it’s not the only shop backlogged.

“We’re pretty much booked through into September,”said Lance Koss, owner of Dentagon.

He says business hasn’t slowed down.

“There’s been more recent hail storms that have hit so it’s just an on-going process of more claims coming in on a daily basis,” he said.

For people who have been involved in accidents and are trying to get their cars fixed, the delay is bad news.

But with the several hundred cars still sitting in the lot unable to be salvaged, waiting doesn’t sound so bad.
