Severe thunderstorms move across El Paso, Teller counties

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for storm systems moving across El Paso County and Teller County Tuesday afternoon.

This follows Monday’s storms that brought hail and flash flooding throughout the region.

A flash flood warning was issued for the area from Woodland Park to Manitou Springs, including Highway 24 until 6:45 p.m. Travelers should avoid the highway, and people in low-lying areas should move to higher ground. ( PHOTOS )

At about 3:30 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Teller County, including Woodland Park, Green Mountain Falls, and Midland. Later, a warning was issued for Monument and Palmer Lake until 4:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service says a storm over Black Forest was bringing 70 mph winds and up to half-dollar sized hail. The storm was moving southeast at about 10 mph, according to the NWS. The warning expired at about 3:45 p.m., but a flash flood warning was issued until 6 p.m. due to the rain.

Another severe thunderstorm was issued until 4:15 p.m. for the La Veta area, which is close to the Spring Fire. That storm may also cause flash flooding concerns if heavy rain falls on the burn scar.
