Former Fremont Co. deputy gets 15 days for mishandling evidence

A former Colorado detective has been sentenced to 15 days in jail and fined $1,000 for mishandling evidence.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports that Fremont County Judge Norman Cooling on Monday sentenced Robert Dodd to 180 days in jail but suspended 165 days.

Dodd will be allowed to remain free pending an appeal of his conviction.

He apologized to the judge, the sheriff, and the community.

A jury on June 29 found Dodd guilty of misdemeanor abuse of public records and two petty counts of second-degree official misconduct.

The records involved were discovered in December 2016 inside a storage unit that had been previously owned by Dodd. They were suspected to be evidence linking a suspect to the area where Candace Hiltz was brutally gunned down in 2006.
