Texas woman uses baby as human shield after robbery

A woman was arrested after a robbery attempt Wednesday in North Texas, but when police arrived, she tried to use a child as a human shield.

Police said in a statement that 36-year-old Evelyn Misumi went to a Bank of America in Murphy, Texas, and dumped gasoline and lighter fluid on the floor before demanding cash.

But employees had already alerted police, who were outside waiting, according to the Murphy Police Department. Misumi ran outside; the officers used a Taser and pepper spray on Misumi, but she fled to a car.

Once she got to the car, Misumi “pulled a small child out of the vehicle and attempted to use the child as a shield,” MPD said. It’s not clear how the child is related to Misumi at this time.

One officer rushed from behind and put Misumi into a bear hug while the other officers worked to rescue the baby. Misumi was then taken into custody. The child wasn’t reported to be injured.

Misumi was booked into jail on charges of robbery and child endangerment.
