Fire at Colorado Springs Airport ruled accidental

A fire that tore through a section of the Colorado Springs Airport back in April was an accident that happened because of construction work on the roof.

The fire broke out late on April 16 and shuttered the entire airport for a little over a day; nobody was injured.

According to a news release by the Colorado Springs Police Department Thursday, the fire was caused by “hot works on the roof of the airport,” which is the application of roofing tar and materials with a torch. The fire was fueled by propane cylinders, but the airport’s sprinkler system kept it contained.

The investigation was also reviewed by the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which agreed with the conclusion. No criminal charges are expected.

Repairs to the second and third floors of the airport will be finished by mid-November. Repairs to the baggage claim area will begin in early 2019.
