Colorado Springs officer indicted for ‘unlawful’ shooting

A Colorado Springs police officer was indicted for a shooting on April 13 after an El Paso County grand jury called the shooting “unlawful and reckless.”

The 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that a grand jury voted unanimously to charge Gerald F. Bellow Jr. with attempted first-degree assault, a felony, and reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor.

The shooting happened April 13 near the entrance to the Colorado Springs Airport, where the 53-year-old is assigned.

Details of Bellow’s actions haven’t been released but The Gazette says there was a hit-and-run crash and a shooting after police responded near the airport that day.

Police spokesman Lt. Howard Black says Bellow was placed on paid leave immediately after the indictment was announced.
