Colorado Springs community shows support for fallen K-9

Colorado Springs Police Department lost a crucial member of the team Friday when K-9 Officer Remme died.

The five-year-old Belgian Malinois served the department for three-and-a-half years.

An acute medical issue cut Remme’s mission short, regardless of the veterinary staff efforts. At the moment, we don’t have the details on the call K-9 Officer Remme and his handler responded to.

K-9 Officer Remme had been featured on KRDO before. We were there when Remme was the first K-9 with CSPD to be presented with a bullet and stab-protective vest back in 2015.

The vest was sponsored by a woman in Falcon and given to the department by the group Vested Interest in K-9s. Each vest cost $2,000.

We were also present last year when Remme and his unit were part of the CSPD K-9 calendar. The unit was fundraising money for the department.

After nearly four years of protecting the community, his handler and fellow officers his last call to service was on Friday morning.

The CSPD K-9 Unit declined our interview request and asked for privacy as they say goodbye to one of their own.

The community has shown an outpour of support. More than 600 comments were made on CSPD’s Facebook post about Remme, which was also shared more than 900 times.
