Abeyta family still fighting after baby stolen from crib in Colorado Springs 32 years ago

Sunday marks the 32nd anniversary of the disappearance of 7-month-old Christopher Abeyta.

The baby boy was taken from his crib Colorado Springs home in the middle of the night in July of 1986. Now more than three decades later, there are still little answers concerning what happened to the boy.

Colorado Springs Police confirm that a person of interest has been identified in the case, but have never released a name.

This new age-progression image, recently released by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, shows what Abeyta may look like today. The family continues to search for Abeyta.

“My mom laid a blanket over him and we had no idea that was going to be the last time we saw him,” said Christopher’s older sister Denise Alves during a rally outside the District Attorney’s office Monday morning.

They marched asking for a Grand jury investigation. Family and friends gathered for the cause.

“Right now, it’s really just sad for how long we’ve been looking for him and still haven’t found answers,” said Christopher’s nephew Bobby Bustillos.

“Hopefully someone out there will just come forward and find it in their hearts to say something,” add family friend Jackie Medina.

Regardless of the lack of answers, time has still taken a toll on the family. Christopher’s father suffered several stroked. His mother passed away in February of 2017.

When District Attorney Dan May walked out of his office, Denise was there asking for a private meeting.

“The case is at the investigative stage with the Colorado Springs Police Department,” said May. “They’re the lead agency so all questions should be directed to them.”

Denise was unhappy with this answer, telling us, “32 years we’ve gotten that reaction and unfortunately the Colorado Springs Police Department has not resolved this case.”
