Flash flooding occurs over Southern Colorado burn scars

4:55 p.m. – Hwy 96 between Wetmore and Westcliffe is closed due to flooding. The Hwy has washed out due to flood waters and has also washed cars off the road. Use Alternate route of Hwy 96 though Texas Creek. No injuries reported at this time.

4:45 p.m. – A FLASH FLOOD WARNING is in place for Custer, Fremont and Pueblo Counties until 7:45 p.m. At 4:40 p.m., emergency management officials reported flash flooding from the Junkins burn scar. A flood wave of water and debris is flowing down Hardscrabble Creek and should arrive at Wetmore by 5 p.m. and continue towards the Arkansas river. Florence and Penrose will also be impacted by flash flooding. Move to higher ground NOW.

4:15 p.m. – A FLASH FLOOD WARNING is in place for Custer, Fremont and Pueblo Counties until 6:45 p.m.. At 3:50 p.m., local law enforcement reported flash flooding occurring over the Junkins burn scar. This is due to 1-2″ of rain in a short timeframe. Be aware of quick changing water levels and debris and mudslides, especially over steeper terrain.
