Colorado LGBTQ community discusses Supreme Court nomination

Pride fest kicking off in Colorado Springs for the 28th year. A lthough it’s a celebration, many are worried about what’s next for the LGBTQ community. It all comes after Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement and President Trump announced his nomination to replace him as judge Brett Kavanaugh. But with the amount of progress this community has made, the celebration is also turning political. “It’s a fear to go backwards,” said Derek Roberts.

“You never know what could happen,” said Drew Barns.

Becoming more emotional following the announcement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement. Leaving many afraid of what’s next.

“He has been an ally in a lot of ways but this is a betrayal to me personally,” said Ron Eby.

Especially because it’s unclear what Supreme Court Justice nominee, Brett Kavanaugh’s standings are when it comes to LGBTQ views.

“I don’t think we’ll see supreme court repeal anything as far as same-sex marriage but they could make it more difficult for us to move forwards at the same pace that we are now and that’s my biggest concern.”

Many believe Kennedy was a crucial swing vote when it came to making decisions that expanded gay rights. Most notably, Obergefell vs Hodges — which legalized gay marriage.

“I think same-sex marriage is a really big deal.”

With a lot to celebrate and equality on everyone’s mind, the community hopes they can continue to move forward.
