Community comes together amidst fire burning in Teller County

The High Chateau Fire is keeping hundreds of people out of their homes, and hundreds more waiting for word to pick up and evacuate.

But the community is working together to make it through this difficult time.

The Teller County Republicans opened up their office space Sunday to gather up donations for firefighters and first responders.

Organizers said they took at least six truckloads up to crews just on Sunday alone, full of water, electrolytes, snacks, and toiletries.

Erik Stone, one of the organizers, said when they realized they had space, it was obvious they had to help.

“Wildfire is something we have to live with here in Teller County, and when there are events that threaten our neighbors, then we all just kind of come together,” Stone said.

Stone said they plan to keep up the drop off location behind City Market in Woodland Park from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily for the duration of the fire.
