Pueblo teen who lost fingers and eye to firework shares warning story

Last year’s 4th of July festivities started off normal for Aaden Valdez before a tragic accident severed several of his body parts.

“We were at my house and we had a big block party, we invited friends, family, and neighbors,” said Aaden Valdez.

Like usual, the then 15-year-old planned to shoot off some fireworks.

“I’ve lit fireworks before and somewhat safe,” said Valdez.

When he and his friends decided to take the fun across the street, the night took a turn for the worst.

“I had the firework in my hand right here and the next thing I remember, a bright flash went off, my ears were ringing, I couldn’t see,” said Valdez.

The explosion took his eye and almost his entire left hand.

“[It] damaged my eye and they had to remove it,” said Valdez.

Valdez underwent four surgeries and is finally able to wrestle at Pueblo East High School again. He knows it could have been a whole lot worse.

He’s now on a mission to warn others that fireworks are no joke, so he created a coloring book with safety tips.

“With the coloring books, I want kids to stay safe. Each page has tips. We’re also giving away 1,500 pairs of safety glasses,” said Aaden Valdez.

Although fireworks are banned in Pueblo County due to fire danger, Valdez knows it won’t stop everyone.

He only hopes his campaign will save someone from life-altering injuries like his.
