Hot temperatures and fire danger – 06/28/18
This afternoon/evening: Highs today could be rivaling if not exceeding records in Colorado Springs and Pueblo! Temperatures in the lower elevations will soar to the 90s and low 100s. Find some shady spots, dry hydrated and check on your pets and neighbors on a day like today. We’ll have some increasing clouds this afternoon. Similar to yesterday, we could be tracking some high-based thunderstorms where lightning and gusty winds will be the factors involved. Beyond that, we’re unfortunately tracking some elevated fire danger. We’ve got a Wind Alert Level One in effect and Red Flag Warnings in place for many areas.
Overnight: Red Flag Warnings expire at 9 p.m. Avoid outdoor burning and don’t throw cigarette butts! Lows early Friday will be mild, dropping to the 50s and 60s across southern Colorado. Partly cloudy skies will take us into tomorrow morning.
Extended: A few storms will be taking place in the eastern plains Friday and Saturday; in fact, some could be strong-to-severe – capable of producing large hail and damaging gusts. Stick with us for the latest! Tomorrow, temperatures will stay hot, but we don’t have the same chance for record-breaking highs. Daily chances for storms are expected starting this weekend and lasting until the middle of next week. The Fourth of July may feature isolated storms, but most stay dry. Temperatures start to drop this upcoming weekend as a storm system moves over the northern states.
