Be aware of roofing contractors offering fake deals in Fountain

It’s nearing a week since the worst overnight hail storm hit Southern Colorado in 23 years, and scammers are still trying to take advantage of victims.

Despite the significant damage to communities living in Fountain, KRDO NewsChannel 13 received reports of multiple contractors offering fraudulent deals for help.

“A few people have come up and tried to offer their services,” said David Demoss. He’s dealing with five smashed solar panels on the roof of his home.

Demoss said a few sketchy offers have targeted his central Fountain neighborhood in the past five days.

“They make it sound like a good deal … try to say it’s cheaper than anyone else,” he said.

It’s a deal full of sweet talk and low prices, with no end game. Adam Huskin with Cornerstone Roofing and Gutter said he see’s it all the time.

“They get their first check, take off, and you never hear from them again,” Huskins said.

The scam typically targets the elderly. Be alert for door knockers saying they’re with your insurance company needing you to sign a contract “in order to expedite the process.”

A similar situation happened to Don Niewald, but he spotted the fake offer.

“There’s a lot of fly-by-nights that come, and I don’t want anything to do with them,” Niewald said.

Bottom line, if the deal is legitimate you won’t have to pay a dime until it’s done.

If you have any reason to doubt the company, look to see if they’re licensed with the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department or check their Better Business Bureau rating.
