Southern Colorado experiences worst morning hail storm in 23 years

Many in Southern Colorado woke up to one of the worst hail storms in more than 20 years Wednesday morning.

The largest reported hail was 3″ in diameter near Peterson Air Force Base. According to the National Weather Service, El Paso County hasn’t seen hail this large in the morning hours since 1995.

The hail first started coming down around 1 a.m. Wednesday. Some of the worst damage was seen throughout the Fountain and Security/Widefield areas. ( PHOTOS )

“It was the thunder and lightning first,” one viewer told KRDO Newschannel 13’s Dani Fried. “It was really loud and really close and then it just sounded like someone was throwing baseballs.”

Another viewer told us that “it sounded like Fort Carson was bombing when we woke up.”

If you received any hail damage to your home or car you are encouraged to document it and send it to your insurance company as soon as possible.
