Double amputee conquers Pikes Peak

After four grueling days of climbing, Mandy Horvath has summited Pikes Peak on her own hands and rear-end.

Horvath, the double amputee who gained notoriety for climbing the Manitou Incline back in April, reached the summit around 6:30 p.m. and was embraced by her family and friends.

As if summiting the Manitou Incline with just your two hands weren’t enough, Mandy Horvath is taking on another Colorado adventure.

A video of her scaling the attraction went viral.

She lost her legs in an accident but it hasn’t stopped her from taking challenges that even some people with all four limbs can complete. This time she’s hiking to the top of Pikes Peak.

Horvath started Sunday afternoon by climbing the incline again, beating her first time. She posted a video Facebook saying, “I’m getting ready to put myself through this hell again and go further, all the way to Pikes Peak!”

For her 25th birthday, she wanted to be outdoors and give back to a cause. All the funds raised through this hike are going to two organizations close to her heart, The Battle Buddy Foundation, that helps veterans with service dogs, and Operation Ward 57, that supports wounded veterans and their loved ones.

Her parents, Lisa and Clayton Horvath made the trip from Missouri to send their daughter off on the hike and then watch her make it to the top Tuesday morning. Her father said, “it’s not something that everybody can do and for her to do it on her butt.” Her mom chimed in, “Twice now and then all the way to Pikes Peak! That’s amazing!”

Horvath said she’s also climbing to be, “able to call my mom day and tell her she doesn’t have to worry anymore.”

When we told Mrs. Horvath that, she said, “I worry a lot. It’s been devastating.”

Instead, her daughter did the opposite. Her dad said, “I didn’t make it to the top and she did. I’ve got legs.”
