Colorado lawmakers react to US-North Korea summit

History was made Tuesday as Donald Trump became the first sitting President of the United States to meet with a North Korean leader.

The two leaders met in Singapore and had several meetings concerning denuclearization of North Korea and the future of the two nations.

After that meeting, Sen. Cory Gardner (R) of Colorado weighed in on the meeting; first, he credited President Trump.

“The Trump administration, under Congressional direction, deserved praise for abandoning the failed policy of strategic patience and pursuing a maximum pressure campaign that’s actually resulted in unprecedented sanctions against this heinous regime,” Gardner said.

Rep. Doug Lamborn (R) also praised the administration.

“I think the fact that Donald Trump showed some strength and showed some backbone has brought Mr. Kim Jong Un to the negotiating table,” Lamborn said.

Both Lamborn and Gardner, though, also expressed the need to keep the pressure on North Korea moving forward.

“The summit in Singapore must be followed by multiple meetings to test North Korea’s promise of denuclearization — which they’ve made before, and in the past and they have repeatedly violated them. Until such time as North Korea can take those concrete steps to denuclearize, our policy should be to continue the maximum pressure campaign,” Gardner said.

“There’s no way the U.S. is going to allow him to have nuclear warheads that he can put on intercontinental ballistic missiles and reach Los Angeles. We are not going to let that happen, and he’s got to get the message that something’s got to change,” Lamborn said.

We’ve reached out to Sen. Michael Bennet’s office for a statement.

Now the question turns to what the process will look like between the nations moving forward, and what will actually be done by North Korea to take the steps demanded by the United States.
