Fort Carson soldier killed in ATV accident while on leave

A Fort Carson soldier who returned home to Pennsylvania for leave died this weekend in an ATV accident.

Pfc. Cody “C.J.” Maines died at the age of 19 when his ATV rolled over while driving in Ashville.

Maines joined the Army in June 2017 and was assigned to Fort Carson with the 4th Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division on Dec. 19. He is the recipient of a National Defense Service Medal.

Maines was also a firefighter with the Ashville Volunteer Fire Company, having joined a junior program when he was just 14, fire chief Joe Racz told WJAC.

Fort Carson issued a statement Tuesday lamenting Maines’ death:

“The Stagecoach Battalion is deeply saddened by the loss of PV2 Cody Maines. Cody was relatively new to the Army but already demonstrated he was an excellent Soldier,” said Lt. Col. Mike Iannuccilli, 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 4th SB, 4th Inf. Div. “His family has our deepest condolences following this tragic loss.”

An honor ride has been organized by the Patriot Guard for Tuesday afternoon ahead of Maines’ funeral on Wednesday.
