Strong afternoon storms possible – 05/18/18
Today: It will be cooler today compared to what we’ve seen recently! We could also be dealing with some strong-to-severe storms in the Pikes Peak region later this afternoon and evening. Some of these storms could be capable of producing large hail, damaging gusts, isolated tornadoes and pockets of heavy rain. Some hail could be the size of golfballs, and gusts could reach 70 mphs (near hurricane strength)! Some in the eastern plains could deal with some funnel clouds and isolated tornados (Kiowa County has the best chance for this). Highs today will reach the 70s and 80s under partly cloudy skies. It will be a bit breezy. In eastern Las Animas and Baca Counties, we have Red Flag Warnings in effect this afternoon. No outdoor burning in those areas!
Tonight: A few lingering showers and storms are possible, but this will be primarily taking place along and north of the Palmer Divide. Lows drop to the 30s and 40s for the Pikes Peak region with the 50s elsewhere.
Extended: Temperatures will be noticeably cooler this weekend compared to this last week! Highs will only climb to the 50s and 60s on Saturday. Throughout the day on Saturday, we’ll be dealing with on-and-off showers and storms; however, they’re not expected to be as strong as what we could see this afternoon. Scattered PM storms are then possible Sunday through Tuesday. Saturday night into Sunday, there could be some fresh accumulation of snow atop Pikes Peak. In fact, a little bit of snow could make its way into Teller County, too. For the Air Force Academy graduation on Wednesday, the weather looks nice! There will be a slight breeze, mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures.
