Day one of state tennis tournament

Nerves were high for day one of the state tennis tournament, “A little nervous,” says Hana Kimmey of Liberty, “I was a little nervous,” says Morgan Hall of Cheyenne Mountain.

At least a little bit, Liberty’s Hana Kimmey fought through the anxiety and the spotlight to win her first match of the day in number one singles, “I don’t really like the audience, I’m not used to it but I’m going to try and really focus on my match and not really care about who’s watching,” says Kimmey.

Junior Morgan Hall is on her third visit to the state tournament but she’s hitting the court with a new mentality, “I guess I am maybe putting a little less pressure on myself because I have changed my game a little bit so it’s more just doing the best that I can do and it’s really fun I like it a lot right now, I think I love it more than I have in the last few years,” says Hall.

She won in number one singles as did her Cheyenne Mountain school-mates in number one doubles.

There was a marathon match of the day, “On the second set I threw up because I had hit my head earlier in the match trying to get a ball and so I was really sick feeling so I had to take a break,” says Austynn Crocker of Lewis Palmer. Crocker and Kyra Rothwell played well over three hours of tennis in number two singles, with Crocker winning in three sets, “Well me and Kyra are pretty good friends and you always want to beat your friends so,” says Crocker.
