Man dies a month after bus crash in east Colorado Springs

The driver of an SUV involved in a crash on April 6 in east Colorado Springs died from his injuries this past weekend.

We reported when the crash happened on Hancock Expressway near Monica Drive last month. The driver of the SUV had turned left in front of the bus, but it was struck and pushed into a tree. Neighbors saw the man with a bloody head and used a nearby sign as a gurney to carry him to flat ground.

Colorado Springs police said Monday that the driver died Saturday morning. His identity wasn’t given.

One person on the bus suffered a minor injury in the crash.

A bus and an SUV crashed into each other on Hancock Expressway near Monica Drive Friday afternoon in east Colorado Springs, and three people were taken to the hospital.

The SUV was pinned against a tree and the bus went into a nearby backyard.

Neighbors tell KRDO they used a crowbar to pry the SUV’s door open and get the driver out. They used a nearby sign as a makeshift gurney to carry him to flat ground. The man was taken to the hospital with head injuries and is in critical condition.

Seven people were on the bus, including the driver, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department. Two on the bus sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the SUV attempted a turn onto Monica Drive when it was hit by the bus.

Eastbound Hancock Expressway is blocked from Jet Wing to Monica Drive.

The Public Information Officer with the Colorado Springs Department is heading to the scene to provide updates.
