Suspect shot by officer in west Colorado Springs identified

The Colorado Springs Police Department released the identity of the man shot by an officer who was responding to a burglary at O’Brien’s Printing on April 25.

CSPD Officer Troy Kananen chased 41-year-old Jese Paul Schlegel around the 1000 block of 19th Street, according to a news release.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said Schlegel drew a pistol and pointed it at a citizen nearby. That’s when Kananen fired at the suspect, striking him more than once.

“There were three pops, three very loud pops,” said Kathy Fletcher, a neighbor who lives across the street.

No officers were injured, and Kananen has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation. Officers are not searching for any other suspects.

The El Paso County Deadly Force Investigation Team will be investigating the shooting.
