SCAMBUSTERS: Hackers impersonate Facebook CEO
A new scam is circulating Facebook where hackers are impersonating the CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, to entice victims to send money for a lottery scheme.
How it works
A scammer contacts you through Facebook messenger claiming you’re in the running to win a lottery sponsored by the company. The catch? You have to send between $400-$800 to pay for ‘fed-ex’ fees. That’s the scam.
“It may seem foolish to begin with, but parts of it did seem legitimate,” said Dan Stabler, a victim of the scam.
Stabler said one of the messages included pictures of people with checks, along with videos of people claiming how excited they were to be one of the winners.
“The scammer even sent a real picture of Zuckerberg’s California drivers license,” said Stabler.
Tips and tricks
Bottom line. Anytime you receive a suspicious message on Facebook — verify their profile first.
Also, make sure you have strict privacy settings. To do this — click on the drop down bar at the corner of your profile page, scroll down to settings, and then click the tab that says ‘privacy’.
Then you’ll want to make sure each question is on ‘Friends’ to limit the access people have to your profile.
