Multiple Otero County crashes kill 2, injure 1

An Otero County teenager was killed in a rollover accident on State Route 109 north of La Junta, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The 17-year-old victim, of Cheraw, was not wearing a seatbelt, according to CSP. She was ejected from the car.

The victim’s 13-year-old sister also was hurt in the accident. The names and the survivor’s condition have not been released. Investigators don’t believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident.

According to the CSP, shortly after 1:00 pm Sunday, the driver left the roadway, overcorrected and then the Chevy Suburban began spinning and rolled. The victim was transported by air to a nearby hospital where she died or her injuries.

Meanwhile, another accident near La Junta also has claimed the life of a 28-year-old driver. John Miguel Naraz-Estrada of Swink died in a single-vehicle crash on Colorado Highway 10 early Saturday.

CSP said Estrada was driving the 2013 Ford Raptor, when it drifted off the road and collided with a bridge abutment. The vehicle went airborne and caught fire before coming to rest in an irrigation canal.

Narez-Estrada was pronounced dead on the scene. He was a track coach at La Junta High School and is believed to have been traveling to a track meet when the accident happened.

CSP said the accident remains under investigation. CSP is looking into possible factors which may have contributed to the accident, including alcohol.
