Man dies after being shot by Colorado Springs police

Colorado Springs Police responded to a shooting involving a police officer Wednesday morning. Officers shot and killed a man during a chase in the 1000 block of 19th Street.

“There were three pops, three very loud pops,” said Kathy Fletcher, a neighbor who lives across the street.

Police fired at least one shot while responding to a burglary at O’Brien’s Printing early Wednesday morning. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect drew a pistol and pointed it at a citizen nearby. That’s when the officer fired at the suspect.

The man was transported to a local hospital where he died.

“It just makes you nervous… it gets really scary,” Fletcher said.

No officers were injured, and the involved officer was placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation. Officers are not searching for any other suspects.

19th Street and Yampa Street in Old Colorado City are fully blocked off. Avoid the area.

“It’s a little disturbing to have it all happen on the corner of my block,” said Richard Metzner, a neighbor living nearby. “I’ve seen a lot of cops at that print shop in the past few weeks.”

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will be taking over the investigation.
